What does “good mental health” actually mean for people with intellectual disabilities? So far, there has been no clear or unified answer to this question. Our research group, together with experts from academia and practice, as well as people with intellectual disabilities themselves, has developed a first shared understanding.

In an inclusive study, several key factors emerged – ranging from social participation, support, and communication to a healthy living environment and the opportunity to experience meaning in everyday life.

Most importantly, people with intellectual disabilities were not only participants but were actively involved as co-researchers throughout the entire process. This study demonstrates how valuable participatory research can be for developing a truly inclusive understanding of mental health.
